December 7.30 pm Haydn Baryton Trios
The baryton The
delicate and exotic sound of the baryton has fascinated audiences for almost four hundred years, since its invention in the
early 17th century. The baryton is a bowed string instrument, rather like a cello or viola da gamba.
Its secret lies in an additional set of wire strings, a ‘hidden harp’, which runs behind the fingerboard
and can only be played with the thumb of the left hand. It is the unique combination of plucked and bowed sounds which gives
the instrument its special character. Haydn baryton trios Haydn's close association with the baryton
in the years 1765-1775 is well known. His patron, Prince Nikolaus I, had formed a passion for the instrument and in 1750 had
a fine baryton built for his own use. As a knowledgeable connoisseur of music and an amateur baryton player of some competence,
he demanded a constant stream of new works not only from his Kapellmeister Haydn but also from several other composers at
the Court. Almost all the surviving music is for the combination baryton, viola (occasionally violin) and cello; some 126
trios by Haydn and further sets of 24 each from Tommassini, Burksteiner and Neumann. Jeremy Brooker Baryton Jennifer Bennett classical viola Poppy Walshaw classical
